A spring storm blew through last night. As I was making Jordan's cup of tea (he's a little under the weather), I could hear the clattering of our bamboo wind chimes on the back porch. This morning, the only evidence of the rain was the scattered puddles on the road as I walked the boys to school. Big puffy clouds and blue skies reflected on their surface and a refreshing chill hung in the air.
This week, Ben and I are eagerly awaiting our seeds that we ordered a few weeks ago from Seed Savers Exchange. Hopefully in transit are our dragon carrots (fuschia-colored!) chocolate bell peppers, ebony tomatoes, and our scrumptious French honeydew melon called Boule d'Or. We are also super excited about our ornamental grass that we ordered called "bunny tails"--which, as you may have guessed, sports fluffy little tufts at the top of the grass. It is hard not to jump when I hear the mailman coming up the road.
Speaking of planting, I am putting in a zinnia bed in the backyard, inspired by our visit at the beginning of last fall to a local organic farm. I fell in love with the big globe-like blooms and beautiful colors of those flowers. I also bought some seeds for a variety called "Envy"--which will boast lovely chartreuse colored flowers. I am so over-the-moon over my little seeds.
Right now, however, is the reality of digging up part of my lawn to start building the bed. Hard work that will hopefully be gratifying in the long run. The zinnias are supposed to be good for bees, too. Poor bees, they need all the help they can get these days.
One cool thing is that I managed to score some free landscaping lava rocks off of Craiglist from their free section. If you ever want to do some landscaping, surf the Craiglist free section for a week or two before you go out to buy what you need. I've found that very often, people will change their landscaping and will give away the stuff they don't want anymore--I've seen rocks, bark, pond liners, and plants all free for the taking. It's worth a shot if you want to save some bucks!
Happy exploring!
